The commercial ships division of Carisam-Samuel Meisel has a rich history spanning over a century. Established in Baltimore in 1920 by brothers Abe and Sam Meisel, the company initially focused on supplying “slop chest” provisions to ship crews visiting the Port of Baltimore. Over time, Samuel Meisel expanded its offerings to include duty-free tobacco and later diversified into spirits, beers and wines.
Samuel Meisel earned a reputation for maintaining a comprehensive inventory tailored to the varied needs of seamen, coupled with reliability, fair pricing and integrity. This reputation solidified the company’s standing in the maritime supply industry. In 1989, Samuel Meisel acquired Lipschutz Brothers, a Philadelphia-based ship supplier founded in 1905.
This strategic acquisition enabled the company to extend its services to vessels docking in New York, Philadelphia, Wilmington and Norfolk, strengthening its position in the bonded goods sector.
Subsequent acquisitions of Carisam and A.H. Riise further expanded the company’s footprint, culminating in the adoption of the name Carisam-Samuel Meisel. This expansion integrated ports across Florida, encompassing both the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the Peninsula.
